E. coli 0157:H7 produces a powerful toxin that can cause severe diarrhea, kidney damage, and sometimes death. It can be especially dangerous when contracted by the young, old or those with compromised immune systems.

What are the symptoms of E. coli poisoning?
The most common symptoms of E. coli poisoning include:

  • Severe abdominal cramps & pain
  • Bloody diarrhea
  • Dehydration
  • Kidney Failure (extreme cases)

Onset of E. coli poisoning symptoms is usually sudden. It typically begins with severe stomach cramps and pain, followed by diarrhea within 24 hours. As the disease advances, the diarrhea becomes watery and eventually bloody. Vomiting may also occur. A fever is not usually present.

How long after eating the poisoned pizza will symptoms begin to appear?
The typical period from ingestion of the bacteria on the contaminated pizza to the onset of symptoms is 3 to 9 days.
